Media Confusion
“J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. reported an 84% drop in third-quarter net income amid $3.6 billion in write-downs and $640 million in losses from last month’s acquisition of Washington Mutual, as the banking giant saw continued deterioration in its home-lending portfolio.” - WSJ
“JPMorgan Chase continued to weather the financial storm better than most rivals in the third...

Time Inc just released a Netflix for magazines. $4.95 gets you 3 titles per month, $7.95 for 5 titles, $9.95 for 7 titles and every title beyond that costs an extra $1 per month and you can switch titles anytime.
This is a really cool service and might make me a magazine subscriber again.

iPhone review
I am going to dumb this down as much as possible. My iPhone review is 1 sentence long. The “i” part is unbelievable - this is the most innovative and well designed gadget I have ever come across; the “phone” part - really poor: horrible reception (worse than just the general AT&T network) and terrible battery life are my two biggest issues.
Overall though, I am...

Interesting Digital Media News Stories
Stories that I came across over the past 24 hours that I thought were particularly interesting:
- Media Outlets Losing Money from a lack of auto ads - Some really interesting data points in here regarding the effect (or is it affect, i think it is effect) of the impact of the declining auto industry on ad-supported mediums.
- This year the auto industry will sell the fewest number of cars since...

Given Fred’s take on Bloomberg, I am sure he will appreciate this sage advice even more going forward… fred-wilson: Words of wisdom from Steve Kane (actually Steve’s dad): btw, the best advice my old man gave, and the advice he drilled most emphatically and repeatedly was, ASK FOR THE ORDER. you’d be amzed…

Dharmesh's 2008 Startup School Takeaways
Great advice from thought leaders of several different verticals of the startup world. Of the advice below, I think the three most important are: Jack Sheridan (get legal topics sorted out correctly from the get go), Greg McAdoo (back great entrepreneurs that know the market) and Marc Andresson (become indispensable and don’t give up) It would be interesting to see others thoughts - reblog...
Investing in Advertising Based Business Models
Over the past few years, investments in companies with business models that monetize (or plan to) through direct ad sales are increasingly common. In terms of these investments, I am specifically referring to companies who do content creation (Funny or Die) and / or have consumer facing products (Facebook) where advertising based business models are appropriate. Ad based businesses can be...

Calacanis on ad networks - one size doesn't fit...
Jason Calacanis recently wrote a piece discouraging publishers from using ad networks, saying: a) it creates channel conflict (when you have an ad sales force) and b) it lowers the prestige of a publisher’s site, since the advertisers on ad networks are crap. Jason is a smart and successful guy, but I totally disagree. Ad networks serve as a useful part of the online advertising...

The coolest thing about Tumblr. . .
Tumblr is great in that it makes blogging easy. Posting text, pictures, video, audio, etc. is so easy through Tumblr that one might call it “blogging for dummies”. But to be honest, setting up a blog through Blogger or Wordpress isn’t that hard. It isn”t as easy as Tumblr, but it ain’t all that hard. What I think seperates Tumblr from the “pre-Tumblr”...

Dell'Anima Investment
A few of my readers know that I recently invested in a new restaurant in the West Village called Dell’Anima. The restaurant opened in October 2007. It is an awesome little Italian spot on 8th Avenue and Jane Street and so far has been knocking the cover off of the ball. It has gotten great PR from many notable outlets including the front page of CitySearch (new and notable restaurants)...

Monetizing Ad Inventory
My friend Darren who is Head of Digital Media at The Media Kitchen (a NYC based agency) makes an insightful post worth reading for any investor or entrepreneur who is involved with start-ups who have services that are monetized by advertising. Too often I see very aggressive assumptions around advertising sell-thru rates; the very worst are the projections that don’t even include a...

Microhoo - Bad for startups - or is it????
There has been a lot of talk lately about the negatives of a Microsoft - Yahoo combination from the vantage point of the VC and start-up world. Bijan, Megan McCarthy from Wired, Bill Burnham are just a few voices who make logical arguments. The negatives are obvious - Yahoo has been one of the more aggressive acquirers of start-ups, so by removing this player, less start-ups will be acquired...
